What is team racing?
A team is made up of six people sailing three boats. The team works together using tactics and boat handling skills to get round a course in front of a team from another university, ideally finishing in 1st, 2nd and 3rd, although any combination that adds up to 10 points or wins! St Andrews has a fleet of six brand new Fireflies used purely for team racing.

At St Andrews we typically fill two teams. In the year 2013-2014 our A team qualified for the British University Sailing Association Team Racing Championships, finishing in a good position in comparison to other Scottish universities. In 2014-2015 we managed to fill three teams, which all performed well in their respective leagues against other Scottish universities.

What do we take part in?

We compete in the Scottish Student Sailing League which gives us a chance to qualify for the British university team racing finals. There are three league weekends hosted by different universities who organise racing, accommodation and socials! We also race in a fourth competition, the SSS Championships, which is a three day event with a legendary ball on the last night.

This year the Scottish Student Sailing League weekends are going to be held on the 14/15th November 2015, the 30th/31st of January and the 6/7th of February 2016.

Training takes place most Saturdays at Loch Ore, the top team racing venue in Scotland, which is only a 45 minute drive from St Andrews. We also train in St Andrews on Wednesday afternoons in tactics and fitness. Boats can also be hired from the town sailing club by club members to race off East Sands.

How can I get involved?

Selection for the 2015/16 team will occur early on in September – if you’re interested in trying out for the team, let us know during Freshers Week! Don’t worry if you’ve never team raced before, it’s easy to pick up and a natural progression from fleet racing. If you’re hoping to make the first team, try and get out on the water as much as possible over the summer to give you the best possible chance! But even if your sailing style is more Jack Sparrow than Ben Ainslie, come along to try-outs (and socials) as we need your liver on the team!
